1. Write Your Own Ancient Egyptian Myth

When you think of Ancient Egypt, you probably think of their myths featuring fascinating gods and goddesses. Egyptians used myths to make sense of the world around them and to explain everything from the weather to the human condition, including love, lying and death.

Work with your child and get their creative juices flowing by asking them to write their own Ancient Egyptian myth. Give them a description and a picture of a god. Your child will then have to create an identity for the god, explaining their character and their story.

2. Draw an Egyptian Mask

In Ancient Egypt, masks served two purposes: ritual masks and death masks. We’ve all seen these famous masks, made in the likeness of the deceased. Sit down with your children and talk them through how to draw an outline for an Egyptian mask, or provide them with a printout. Then let your child colour them in and decorate them as they please.

 3. Make Your Own Ancient Egyptian Bread

Did you know the earliest known bread was made in Ancient Egypt in 8000 BC? In fact, an Ancient Egyptian’s diet depended heavily on bread. It was consumed at every meal. In Ancient Egypt, bread was made of an ancient wheat called “Emmer”. As a fun Ancient Egypt activity for your kids, why not try your hand at making some delicious flatbread?

Andante Travels have an incredible (and fairly simple) recipe you can try, originally found on the wall of Senet’s tomb in Luxor. Ingredients include:

  • 6 fl oz warm water
  • 1 tbsp mild honey
  • 7g tsp active dry yeast
  • 250g plain flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Details of the recipe are in this link. To keep things old school, beat the mix by hand instead of using an electric mixer!

4. Write Your Name in Hieroglyphs

Children love learning about Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. A hieroglyph was a character in the Ancient Egyptian writing system. Hieroglyphs were called “the words of God” by the Egyptians and were used mainly by priests. They were generally used on temple walls or public monuments. Egyptian writing with ink on papyrus or other smooth surfaces was a different form altogether.

For a fun project, print out hieroglyphs and work with your kids to write out their own names. They’ll love the results!
